‘That Polish Thing’ is still among my favourite photography projects, and one that is still ongoing. It should have been given a new lease of life with our move here, but remained pretty dormant until the last couple of months.
It’s a project about the differences I saw between the native countries of my wife and I. It’s about atmosphere, texture and progress. It is not a factual representation of Poland but rather my response to the country.
Shooting it has taken me to places that I wouldn’t otherwise have visited. Indeed, it has taken me to places that I don’t think any foreigner has ever visited. Many of the places I photographed don’t exist now, or have been gentrified, and those layers of history and patina, covered over (again), especially many of the murals that I travelled miles to see.

I did make a book version of this project, but it was a one-off made in Snapfish. One day, I’ll make a zine…
